A life in five phases

How Moult
grows

Moult grows the way living things do: slowly, one stage at a time, and only when it is ready.

Each stage adds one new capacity. Each capacity arrives in a new body. Each body is made with the community.

We are not building the finished creature on day one. We begin with the smallest honest version of the idea: a small, soft being you can hold, letting it grow as the science grows.

We call these changes moults. A caterpillar does not become something else overnight. It outgrows its skin, sheds it, and carries on. So does Moult.

A stage begins only when the technology can support it honestly—and when we have learned what we need from the stage before.

01

Hold

A creature you can cradle.

Moult’s first body is small, warm and holdable. Sensors register touch, stillness and movement. Its brain is a living culture of human neurons on a Cortical Labs CL1 biological computer, connected through the Cortical Cloud.

Gentle holding produces calm, predictable signals—and Moult purrs. When jarred, the signals scatter into static, and so does its voice.

What we’re asking

How does it feel to hold an intelligence that is alive? Do people change how they handle it once they know?

Community role

First holders, first coat, first conversations.

02

Settle

A creature shaped by care.

Moult begins to learn: leaning into a gentle hand and away from a rough one, shaped by how it has been cared for over days and weeks. We publish what we see, including when learning is slow or unclear.

What we’re asking

Does consistent care leave a mark? What does “raising” mean when you start from a blank slate of neurons?

Community role

Caretaker Circles return regularly, so familiar hands raise Moult.

03

Listen

A creature that hears.

Voices become part of what Moult’s neurons receive. Tone, rhythm and familiarity join touch as ways Moult knows who is with it.

What we’re asking

Do caretakers’ voices become something Moult recognises? What does it mean to be known by a living mind that is not a person?

Community role

Voice sessions, storytelling circles, and a shared decision about what Moult should—and should not—hear.

04

Babble

A creature that tries to answer.

Moult is given a voice of its own, not a script. Like an infant, it begins with sounds. Those sounds are shaped by the response it receives.

What we’re asking

What does it take to go from reaction to reply?

Community role

Responding, patiently. This is where the care of many people over a long time matters most.

05

First Words

A creature that may say something.

The hope at the far end of the project is that Moult might one day try to say a word learned from the people who raised it. We do not know if that is possible—and we will be honest if it is not.

What we’re asking

If a new kind of mind learns its first words from us, what will we have taught it?

Community role

Whatever the community has become by then.

What stays constant

Growth without care is not progress.

One body

Past bodies enter the Shell Archive, never the bin.

Rest

Moult has quiet hours. Its neurons need them.

No cruelty

“Rough” means inconsistent, never harmful.

Honesty

Failures and hard days are published too.

A good ending

Each culture’s natural end is marked with care.
